Deadman's Cellphone
Deadman's Cellphone
About the Story
"Dead Man's Cell Phone" is a darkly comedic play by Sarah Ruhl that explores themes of connection, technology, and mortality. The story begins when Jean, a woman at a café, answers the incessantly ringing cellphone of a man, Gordon, who has just died. Instead of disconnecting the call, Jean becomes enmeshed in Gordon's life, immersing herself in his relationships with his family, friends, and mistress. Through her interactions with these characters, Jean grapples with her own desires for connection and the complexities of human relationships in a digital age, ultimately discovering truths about love, loss, and the afterlife. Ruhl's play skillfully navigates between absurdity and profundity, offering a poignant reflection on the ways in which technology shapes our interactions and understanding of death.
Behind the Design
For my Design I wanted to put off a coffee shop vibe with the brick walls and the chalkboard to show a family feel with handwritten titles. I also included a spilt coffee cup with the cellphone.
